Most Asked .LK Domain Questions - Answered by Register.lk

At Register.lk, we understand that domain-related questions can be confusing, especially if you're registering your first .LK domain. Whether you're a business owner, blogger, or just curious about domain ownership and management, this guide answers the most frequently asked questions from our customers in a clear and straightforward manner.

  1. Who is the owner of a .LK domain?

The domain is registered to the person whose details are submitted at the time of registration (Registrant details are requested after payment is completed). This means the individual or organization mentioned in the Registrant documentation becomes the official owner of the domain.

  2. What documents should be submitted?

Depending on whether you're registering under a personal or business category, the requirements slightly differ:

Personal category (e.g., blog or eCommerce):

    1. Photo of the domain owner's NIC / Driving License / Passport
    2. Signed letter agreeing to .LK policies (the letter template is provided in the online form after purchase)

    Business category:

    1. Photo of the domain owner's NIC / Driving License / Passport
    2. Business Registration (only if available)
    3. Signed letter agreeing to .LK policies, printed on company letterhead

  3. Do I need to do anything after submitting the details?

No further action is required from your side. We'll handle everything once your documents are received and verified.

  4. What's a CAT?

CAT refers to the domain category. Here's a breakdown:

    • CAT1 (Standard): Top Level Domain + available Second Level Domains
    • CAT2 (Economy): Top Level Domain only
    • CAT3 (Budget): Second Level Domain only
    • CAT4 (Premium): Two-letter domains, numeric domains (2-7 digits), and other premium names
    • CAT5 (Desirable): Three-letter domains, numeric domains (8-10 digits), and other desirable names

  5. What are the different .LK domain types?

A quick guide to common second-level domains (SLDs) under .LK:

    • .com.lk - Commercial entities or personal brands
    • .org.lk - Nonprofits, clubs, or societies
    • .edu.lk - Educational institutions
    • .gov.lk - Government organizations
    • .hotel.lk / .web.lk - Industry-specific or usage-specific purposes

  6. Can I get one domain name and all available second level domains?

Yes. CAT1 domains are available on request only. To get a primary domain with its associated second-level domains, open a support ticket and request an invoice.

    example.lk + example.com.lk + example.org.lk + example.edu.lk + example.web.lk + example.hotel.lk

  7. What happens if I submit documents late?

Once you purchase the domain, and if it hasn't been requested by another provider, it will be reserved for a period of 1-2 days. During this time, you must submit accurate registrant information and complete the registration. If you fail to do so, the domain will be released to the public, and you may request a refund for the domain.

  8. Can developers submit details on behalf of clients?

Yes. However, kindly note that the registrant's details which must be submitted must be the client's details and not of the developer.

  9. What email address will be used for domain notifications?

    • The registrant's email will be used for all official domain communication from the LK Domain Registry.
    • The Register.lk account email will be used for billing and support-related communications.

  10. How much time will it take to register?

Once the domain owner's details are submitted, it may take few minutes to complete the registration if all the provided details are correct. If anything is missing or incorrect, our support agents will contact you. After successful registration, .LK domain propagation may take up to 48 hours (0-2 business days).

  13. How to change the owner details of a registered .LK domain?

Ownership details cannot be directly updated. According to the LK Domain Registry, you must first deregister the domain and then register it again with the new owner's details.

    How to deregister:

Open a support ticket requesting for domain deregistration. This process can take up to 7 business days. Once complete, you will be notified, and you can then re-register the domain with the new owner's details.

  14. Can I resell my .LK domain?

No. Reselling .LK domains is strictly prohibited under the policies of the LK Domain Registry.

  15. Can I purchase and hold a domain to sell later?

No. Holding or purchasing .LK domains for the purpose of resale or future transfers is not allowed. Domains must be used for legitimate purposes.

  16. Can I change admin, technical, and billing roles?

No. These roles are handled by Register.lk. You, as the registrant contact, are the official domain holder.

  17. What is the renewal process for a .LK domain?

    • You'll be notified by email before the domain's expiry.
    • If not renewed in time, there's a 30 day grace period during which you can still renew.
    • After the grace period, the domain will be suspended from the .LK registry. You will have another 30 days to renew it before it is released back to the public. Also note that it can take up to 24 hours for the domain to be activated after the suspension.
    • You can login to your register.lk account and go to Billing > My Invoices to check your invoices.
