(24-sept-2024)

Registering personal .lk domain with register.lk

Looking to register a .LK domain? The first thing to know is that there are different .LK domain registration categories based on what you're creating. If it's for a business or company, you'll want to follow the steps here. For a club or society, you can find the process here. But if you're registering a .LK domain for personal use-whether it's for a blog, portfolio, or online store-this guide will show you exactly how to get started, with a simple, hassle-free process.

What Types of Websites Can You Register as a Personal .LK Domain?

Here are some common types of websites that are suitable for personal domain registration:
  • eCommerce Websites: If you're running a small personal online store.
  • Portfolio Websites: For showcasing your work, skills, and projects.
  • Online Publication Websites: Content-sharing or selling platforms, such as blogs or e-book websites.

Why Register a LK Domain Under the Personal Category?

There are several reasons why individuals opt to register a .LK domain under the personal category. Below is a comparison between registering a domain for personal use versus registering it under a business or company:

Personal Business/Company
When you search for the domain's ownership information on the LK domain registry, the domain owner's personal name is shown. When searching for the domain's ownership under a company, the company's name will be displayed instead of a personal name.
The registration process is easier compared to registering a domain for a company. Business registration requires submitting company details, not just personal information.
The domain owner must be the actual individual who owns the domain, not a developer or a third party. For business domains, the domain owner should be the company owner or an authorized person in the company.

How to Choose the Right .LK Domain

Choosing the right domain can be a bit of a hassle, especially if you're not sure where to start. To make this process easier, keep the following key factors in mind:
  1. Relevance: Ensure your domain name reflects your personal brand or the purpose of your website, whether it's for an eCommerce store, portfolio, or content-sharing platform.
  2. Simplicity: Keep the domain name simple and easy to remember. Avoid using complicated words or phrases that may confuse visitors.
  3. Uniqueness: Check the availability of your desired domain name and make sure it's unique to avoid legal issues or confusion with other brands.
Selecting the right domain sets the foundation for your online presence, so choose wisely!

How to Register Your LK Domain Under the Personal Category

Follow these steps to register a .LK domain under the personal category using register.lk:
  1. Visit register.lk and use the search panel to find your desired domain.
  2. Based on the search results, you will be presented with several options, including bundle packages. Choose the package that suits you best.
  3. Add the domain to your cart, proceed to checkout, and make the payment.
Once the payment is completed, you will receive a ticket requesting the Registrant's Information. The copy of the ticket is sent to your email address as well. You can check the tickets by logging into your register.lk account, navigating to the Support section on the top menu bar, and selecting Tickets to view your open tickets. In the ticket, a link will be provided, which will redirect you to a form where you'll be required to submit the following information:
  • Name of the registrant.
  • Personal email address of the registrant. (Ensure this is the personal and valid email address of the registrant, not the developer of the website.)
  • NIC (National Identity card) number of the registrant.
  • Registrant's postal address.
  • Registrant's personal phone number.
  • NIC copy of the registrant (to be uploaded).
  • Digital signature of the domain registrant.

Who Should be the Registrant of Personal LK Domain?

The registrant must be the individual who will own the domain. For example:
  • If the website is for an artist, the artist should be the registrant.
  • If it's an eCommerce website, the owner of the website must be the registrant.

Can a Developer Submit Their Details as the Domain Owner?

No, this is not allowed. The absolute owner's details must be submitted. If you are the developer of the website, you need to submit your client's details as the registrant. Every piece of information-including the NIC copy, address, and especially the email address-must reflect the client's personal information. However, as a developer, you can still manage the billing and DNS settings for the domain on behalf of the client.

What's Next?

After submitting registrant details, there may be a few additional steps depending on the accuracy of the information provided. We will review the submitted details and documents.
  • If the details are accurate, your domain will be registered within 15 - 30 minutes, and the domain propagation process will begin. This propagation process can take anywhere from 0 to 2 business days.
  • Once the propagation process is complete, your domain will be ready for use.
If you have hosting with register.lk, your nameservers will be automatically updated, and the domain will be connected to the hosting service. Otherwise, you can manually update the nameservers of your third-party hosting to point the domain to your hosting package.

How Long Does It Take to Propagate Nameservers?

It can take up to 24 hours for the nameservers to propagate worldwide. You can track the nameserver propagation status using the following link: scan.register.lk.

What If there is an Issue with the Details I Submitted?

If there's any issue with the information you submitted, we will send you a reply via the "More Information Required" ticket. A copy of this will also be sent to your email.

Can I Convert My Personal LK Domain to a Business Later?

Yes, you can change a personally-registered domain to a business-registered domain. However, the business must be legally registered before the conversion. The current domain registrant must be the business owner, and you'll need to provide documentation to prove this. This includes a copy of the Business Registration (BR) and Form 01, which confirm the business ownership under the registrant.

Wrapping Up

That's it! You've successfully completed your .LK domain registration. Now you can start developing your website and publishing it.

Secure your online identity by registering a .LK domain today and get started on your personal website or eCommerce store.
